Dear Marvel. Where did it all go wrong?
I still love you and I'll always keep in contact, but I can't stop myself from mourning what we could have had. I think Marvel could have soared unprecedented heights after Endgame, but instead, got clouded by success, leading to questionable decision making. Marvel fatigue is a more digestible title than just saying Marvel got carried away and thought they're name made them invincible. At least that's how I see it.
After Endgame we got gems like Spiderman: No Way Home, Black Panther 2, GOTG3, Thunderbolts and Wandavision, but we also got Eternals, Thor4(which was a guilty pleasure at the time), The Marvels and more. Casuals don't have the same attachment to franchises as diehard fans, once you break their trust more than once, it's practically over, and that's what happened to Marvel. Too many losses. The only thing worse than losing, is losing because you made yourself look like your incompetent. I firmly believe that Thunderbolts could have done close to Captain Marvel numbers, if it was released before Endgame, maybe even more. Trust is everything. Captain Marvel would have bombed if it was released these past three years, and it was an okay movie. I wouldn't put it past Thunderbolts though and you saw how that underperformed. Just to clear things out, Thunderbolts was definitely a B rated movie. Captain Marvel was either B– or C+. Might be different for you.
So where do they go on from here? They need to take the focus back to creating well written characters with a emphasis on story, rather than setup and crazy antics like the multiverse. It's actually funny how they've started to realise that just before Doomsday. Like now is not the time for that, we've barely had any setup for Doomsday and it's the next Marvel movie after Brand New Day. The hype is being carried by it's name solely, besides the small teadbits we've been given. I really think they should have done more in Fantastic 4. I say this, but we're expecting a close to complete reboot after Secret Wars, so does it really matter. I just hope it doesn't turn out to be a mistake. If they land this crashing plane, maybe they can start afresh and learn from their mistakes.
What's your thoughts on the state of Marvel as a whole?
